Wine tasting is a different experience in these days of social distancing, but winery owners and their staff are as nimble as they are talented. Vineyard growth, weather and Mother Nature’s whims change daily, so this skilled group of artists is used to being on their toes and coming up with creative solutions.
With Lodi’s wide open spaces, expansive winery estates and comfortable climate nearly year-round, wine tasting here has always embraced the outdoors. Lodi is renowned as a great region for picnicking, exploring gorgeous gardens and soaking up the al fresco ambiance. It is also one of the most diverse wine grape growing regions in the U.S. with seven different soils producing more than 100 different varieties of wine.
When venturing out, please take note of simple, regulated courtesies at all wineries: Reservations are required with maximum group sizes often in place. Masks are required, except while sipping and snacking. And all seating is currently outdoors only.
Also note that most wineries are offering their wine by the glass or bottle, instead of multiple small pours. Still, your wine educator will happily help you choose which flavor and style profiles best please your palate.
Even with these changes, wineries are ready to welcome you to their beautiful properties and great times await. So above all, get out there and celebrate.
This historic property was founded by wheat farmer-cattleman William DeVries and his wife, Cornelia Crowe, in 1860. By 1876, the couple had built the gracious white colonial-style home that still stands as a centerpiece of the sprawling ranch. Many of the estate’s towering oaks date back hundreds of years as well.
